Dr. Jeff and Lindsey Carr has a passion for restoring proper motion and movement patterns. Movements are organized by a part of our brain called the Motor Control Center. The MCC is how a baby learns to walk, how we learn to throw or kick a ball, put our pants on in the morning and drive a car. As we go through life changes (compensations) can happen within the MCC in an effort to avoid pain or to deal with the demands that we place on the body. For example, someone who sits at a computer all day, then sits as they commute home, sits to eat dinner and then sits to watch a few hours of TV at night will become deconditioned in certain key areas that leads to poor posture and poor activation of all of our muscles. The MCC knows when these muscles are no longer able to perform efficiently or properly and will change the motor pattern. That means that it will choose to use a different set of muscles to try to accomplish the task at hand and this is where nagging tightness and constant pain can become a regular occurrence. If muscles are being asked to perform tasks that they are not designed to do as a primary roll they will fatigue and injure very easily.
Now take the above example and apply it to a weekend warrior or ever a high school/ college athlete. If the body is being stressed in the same ways all the time some muscles can become overactive and others under-active... creating imbalances. These imbalances make it so that joints cannot operate as they were designed, always being pulled off center by the overactive muscles. When a joint is not centered during movement it will stress parts of the joint surface, cartilages and joint capsules and stabilizing muscles in a way that they were not designed to handle and injury occurs.
Ensuring that all muscles are performing up to there highest potential allows us to not only rehabilitate difficult injuries but also prevent them in the first place. A thorough functional movement exam is a great way to ensure that your training programs or day to day activities are working all parts of your body adequately and that you are not heading down the road to injury. We can assure you that our functional evaluations (performed after a complete history and orthopedic evaluation) is like nothing you have ever experienced before and will help you gain a better understanding of correct movement and injury prevention.
